I’m talking about heroes like U.S. Army Sergeant Tom. Tom was deployed to Afghanistan several times to fight America-hating terrorists. He exemplified the very best of our Armed Forces. He was a fierce warrior, a beloved comrade to all, and a natural leader.
But Tom now suffers from the emotional wounds of war that haunt him to this day. He admits that thoughts of suicide have crossed his mind several times. To protect his privacy, and that of his family, Tom has asked that we not share his full name.
Tom’s story is important because during the COVID-19 pandemic, military suicides increased by 20% over the previous year.
Service members are struggling with the increased stress of overseas deployments in war zones, natural disasters, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the anti-American riots that have engulfed so many of our cities.
